Places exist not only physically, but also mentally in people’s memories. The identity of a specific place becomes unforgettable when it generates a certain experience, when it arouses associations or memories. These differentiations between regions are crucial to local identity. Without it, cities worldwide would look all too similar to each other. Globalization is becoming the leading threat to iconic and regional architecture. As political, economic and cultural trends converge, the link between place and identity begin to whither. This paper will address the inevitable and increasing phenomenon of globalization and its effects on iconic and local architecture, while reviewing history for collaborative solutions
It has become an unavoidable aspect of the future, and has been used to spread western ideals to underdeveloped countries, extending the consumerist manifestation of luxury. Much attention has been brought to the idea of preserving the local identity in all parts of the globe by means of preservation, and developments under modern standards using local materials and aesthetics. In affect, architects are developing approaches and concepts of how to cope with the globalization trend so as not to affect social, political and economic locality.
